Dr. Aaron Knox, Program Director

We believe our residents should succeed in collaboration with us, not in spite of us. We are privileged to work with incredibly intelligent, highly motivated, accomplished individuals and our mission is to facilitate their development into the best surgeons possible. With 11 residents we are a smaller tight-knit program allowing residents to form close relationships with staff and each other.

Innovative Curriculum

Our curriculum uses educational theory to drive our educational interventions. Key concepts are presented repeatedly throughout the residency training with deepening layers of complexity, or in different applications. We employ a staff lead case based structure for academic half-day and educational rounds. We are fortunate to have access to an onsite world-class simulation center with regular cadaver dissection sessions.

Scholarship, Leadership, & Global Health Opportunities

Our residents are encouraged to get involved in all aspects of scholarship. Some form of research is an expectation however we encourage our trainees to also seek out unique experiences in leadership, education, technology, and entrepreneurship. We host a yearly visiting professor in conjunction with our annual resident research symposium. Many residents also choose to participate in global health opportunities in developing nations providing cleft care and burn reconstruction.

Expert Leadership  &
Hands-On Training

Our teaching faculty are heavily involved in the teaching and leadership of our national societies. We have expertise in all areas of plastic and reconstructive surgery including some underrepresented areas such as gender-affirming surgery, head and neck reconstruction, and complex wrist. We also have a year-long senior resident cosmetic clinic with longitudinal exposure to all types of aesthetic surgery where residents see consults and operate independently with staff supervision and follow their cases until graduation.

We focus our instructional interventions and assessment on experiential learning prioritizing “doing” beyond “knowing”. We have fully adopted Competency By Design and have designed our clinical rotations to facilitate achievement of all required Entrustable Professional Activities. Surgery is distinct within medicine in that we are constantly required to perform fine motor skills which require many repetitions to be able to perform safely and independently. Our residency program provides an unparalleled operative experience allowing the residents ample opportunities to develop technical expertise. Excellent faculty to resident ratios and limited numbers of subspecialty fellows means that residents begin operating independently very early on. Site based home call with abundant access to daytime minor surgery facilitates a high volume of trauma cases without requiring overnight procedures for non-emergent cases.

Shaping Future Leaders in Plastic Surgery

Through regular formative assessment and coaching our graduates are extremely well prepared for the Royal College exams and more importantly for independent practice. While many have proceeded to high profile international fellowship positions, others have decided to enter practice directly as they are confident they have the skills to function as generalist plastic surgeon with no additional training required. We care deeply about the future of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Our vision is to create an environment allowing the future leaders of our speciality to thrive. We aim to produce Canadian plastic surgeons who are excellent communicators, have a growth mindset, work well in teams, and are committed to lifelong learning. The ideal candidate for a residency position in Plastic Surgery at the University of Calgary is hard working, resilient, and self-motivated with a passion for Plastic Surgery.
