Clerkship 
       Overview

The Section of Plastic Surgery invites medical students in their clerkship year to do a plastic surgery elective at the University of Calgary. A two-week elective typically sees the clerk working with the plastic surgery team of consultant surgeons and residents at one of the University of Calgary teaching hospitals: Foothills Medical Centre, Peter Lougheed Centre, Rockyview General Hospital, South Health Campus or Alberta Children’s Hospital. The clerk will gain experience in, patient assessment and management in the hospital setting, including the main operating rooms, emergency room, minor surgery clinic, and out-patient clinics. Participation in an on-call schedule is expected and will be scheduled with the preceptor and resident upon arrival for the elective.

 

Upon completion of an elective, the clerk should understand the basic principles of:

This includes, wound healing and wound closure following the principles of the reconstructive ladder

Patient Management

This includes, the cranial nerve exam and evaluation of facial trauma

Facial Anatomy

This includes, common disorders and traumatic injuries of the hand 

Hand Anatomy

Basic overview of resuscitative care, surgical and non-surgical treatment 

Burn Management

Tips for
Elective Students 

Be on time

Introduce yourself to staff and patients, wear your ID badge

Be engaged, actively participate, ask questions, and clarify if you are unsure 

Be prepared to answer questions about anatomy, procedures or disease processes 

Respect all members of the team which includes: nurses, care aids, porters, cleaning staff, etc

Do not wear hospital scrubs to or from the hospital as per AHS policy

How to Prepare for your Electives  

Contact your preceptor and their admin 1-2 weeks before your elective

Contact the resident(s) you will be on service with the week before your elective regarding meeting time & place, etc.

Be familiar with and ready to use Connect Care, our provincial EMR

Show up in scrubs from locations detailed in the welcome email

Obtain a photo ID/access card from your site’s badging office

Operating Room Expectations

Check the operating room slate. You will need your ID badge to access it. 

Write your name, designation and glove size on the whiteboard in the OR theater 

Know the scrub in procedure and review the aseptic technique 

Introduce yourself to the patient and the OR team 

Review the patient cases; the indications for surgery, expected outcomes and care management 

Dress code: hospital scrubs, scrub cap, closed-toed shoes, no jewelry, no long sleeves
